Newborn photography is often associated with those first few weeks of life—typically between 7 and 14 days old. During this time, babies are extra sleepy, curly, and easier to pose, which is why most photographers recommend scheduling sessions early. But what happens if you miss that window?

Life is unpredictable, and sometimes parents aren’t able to book a newborn session right away. Whether it’s due to recovery, adjusting to life with a newborn, or simply time slipping away, many parents worry that they’ve missed their chance for those sweet, sleepy newborn portraits.

But here’s the good news: it’s never too late to capture beautiful images of your baby.

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a precious little one at 6 weeks old. While a session at this age requires a little extra patience, the results were just as stunning. This sweet baby gave us wide-eyed moments, and even some peaceful, cozy poses.

At 6 weeks, babies are often more alert and aware of their surroundings, which means we can capture beautiful eye contact and maybe even some sweet little smiles. While they may not be quite as curly and sleepy as a brand-new newborn, they are still small, squishy, and absolutely perfect for timeless portraits.

If you're considering a newborn session for a baby who is past the typical 1-2 week timeframe, here’s what you can expect:

  • More Awake Moments: Older newborns spend more time looking around, which allows for stunning images with bright eyes and curious expressions.
  • Different Posing Options: While some classic newborn poses may be more challenging, we can still achieve beautiful wrapped, swaddled, and naturally posed images.
  • Sweet Connections: Babies at this stage may react more to voices and touch, making for heartwarming family and sibling portraits. I recommend booking one of my longer sessions that include family poses!
  • Extra Patience and Flexibility: Every baby is different, and some may take longer to settle. Sessions with older newborns may require a little more time, but the results are always worth it.
